Communicating through art: Paint!

This week’s partners worked on communicating through paint and music. We first began by working with ice cubes, salt, and watercolor for a fun science activity. We discussed our observations and our theories of what caused the ice to melt.

The children have been talking about the music they enjoy to listen to and their knowledge of the dynamics of music. We were so excited to see what the children would be inspired to paint during our “painting with music activity.” We assigned all partners to an easel, provided them with brushes and paint palettes and played music by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Some inspired art were mountains, fireworks and zigzag lines. Here is what we overheard this week.

Conversations overheard:

Kian: What did you like to do with me?

Charley: I liked painting with you at the balloon center.

Kian: I remember when it splashed on my face.

Charley: Remember when were pretending to be policeman?

Kian: Oh yeah, that was fun too.

Sam: Maybe we could play in the block center next time.

Hyebeen: We should play in the kitchen too.

Sam: What about if we build a kitchen in the block center!

Hyebeen: Good idea Sam, maybe after we build it we could make signs for it so no one breaks it down.

Angelo: I liked joining the block center, cleaning up, and we had so much fun eating our snacks together.

Milo: Did you love doing painting with music?

Angelo: I liked panting with music.

Milo: And we loved it so much that we got our hands dirty.

Angelo: Did you like the part when a bug got on my finger?

Milo: Yeah, I thought it was funny.

Elizabeth: We really liked building in the block center.

Will: And remember when we were building a boat?

Elizabeth: It was a snowflake boat.

Will: It looked like a police boat to me. I also really liked doing the balloon painting.

Elizabeth: I really enjoyed the music paint. We made zigzags and the yellow brick road.

Will: I was painting a dragon, the blue dots were his spots.

Aayush: My partners are not here today but I remember that I built a police station with Graydon and Alexander. We used the magnet tiles and I broke it by accident. But it was really funny. I was also painting a big mountain when we painted with music.

Josie: I painted with music and Rex. At first I was making an invisible pipe.

Rex: I was making invisible fireworks too.

Josie: I made a bus too.

Rex: We also made lots of things in the creation center. I made lots of hearts and gave them to all my friends and teachers.

Josie: I helped make hearts too.

Specialists

This week during karate with sensei Bibi the children continue to work on physical fitness, leadership skills, and confidence, and respect.

During soccer with coach Jojo the children work in teams to score goals. They strategize how to work together and play “defense” to protect their “home”.

The children also had a taste test with Diane during a cooking activity. We got to try oranges and grapefruits and looked at the difference in both citrus fruits.
