History: Are we really that different?

This week we are learning and celebrating Martin Luther King Jr! We have read books about MLK Jr’s childhood, his dream that all people are treated equal/ the same, and how hard he fought to make his dream possible. The children love learning about our history and can relate so much to MLK’s dream. We’ve notice the children standing up for one another and speaking up for when things seem unfair. We took this amazing opportunity to introduce the idea of diversity and cultural differences to the Pre-K children.

We also wanted the children to have a visual demonstration to give them better understanding of what diversity means. One of the most amazing things about children is that they are observant and very curious about the world around us. They notice cultural differences, languages, and everything that makes people different. We want to take a moment to celebrate and accept those special differences and how they are a way of life so that our children spread positivity and project acceptance, and inclusivity everywhere they go. However, it is also important we explore all of the amazing things that make us the SAME and that we need each other to work together to create a better community/world. In the end, we are all the same on the inside!

The egg experiment: what’s the same? What’s different?

We asked the children to search for any difference in the two eggs; one brown and one white. We then asked them to sketch their observations on paper. We also asked them what they think the eggs look like on the inside. Additionally, we discussed all about skin color and all of the amazing things underneath our skin. In the end, the children noticed that although the eggs were different colors on the outside, they were exactly the same on the inside.

Home fun:

During the holiday, we kindly ask that you please take a look at your neighborhood. We want the children to begin discussing change. We believe that if we encourage the children to start small by recognizing what changes their neighborhood may need. “”
