CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHT: INFANT

The infant class has been working on sensory exploration with their main focus on different textures. Children are learning through all of their five senses. But, due to the fact they can’t communicate through speech until they’re older, they heavily rely on one sense in particular – touch. Touch is a sense used to interact, interpret and understand the world around them, and is the reason that babies seem to want to grab everything! During Norma’s (the infant teacher) observation in the first weeks of the year she noticed the children were very focused and excited to engage with the different activities we did in the classroom. For example, when they explore sand with their feet, it was clear they were fascinated with the new feeling of the sand texture since they were kicking and tapping their feet in a container full of sand. Learning through touch and texture is also very important due to the fact that it strengthens a child’s motor skills. For instance, gripping, holding, squeezing, stacking, poking, pouring or scooping will help children strengthen the muscles in their body, and also helps them to develop stronger hand-eye coordination. Touch enables children to get an understanding of what objects are and what they feel like by experiencing various shapes and textures.
