Last Day of School! Have a Beautiful Summer Break! See You all in the Fal!

Today was the last day of school, and we celebrated by inviting parents to our morning meeting session for a breakfast party. We sang songs, read books, and watched a video dedicated to a few special moments we shared throughout the school year.

We will miss you all and can't wait to see you in the new school year. Have a lovely summer break!

Video Link Here: https://youtu.be/MFz3mXWDoAY

For our last afternoon meeting sessions of the year, the students brought their sunglasses and we read “Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses”

Throughout the school week, we practiced color recognition, letters, numbers, and shapes. We sang our favorite songs, enjoyed puppet play, and worked on recognizing emotions with visual props and our favorite Spanish song “Si Estas Feliz.”

Have a great summer beak 1A families! Please send us pictures over the summer break! Love you all :)

Good-Bye for now.

See you all in the fall!

Morning & Afternoon Meeting!

This week the 1A friends sang their favorite songs via google hangouts, reviewed emotions using visual props, and songs (“Si Estas Feliz”). We conducted a science experiment with baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring. The students also enjoyed puppet play, practiced color recognition with balloons and pom-poms, practiced letters ( using songs and flashcards ), numbers ( through music and counting ), and shape recognition.

Color Eruption: One of Our Favorite Science Experiments!

How science benefits young learner?

Toddlers are natural scientists. As they learn to ask questions, make predictions, observe, test, and then communicate their findings, they are developing critical thinking skills. Students are also being exposed to new vocabulary, math, and the concept of cause and effect. Young learners communicate the results of their explorations through babbling, laughing, physical gestures, facial expressions, and words.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAILE SMILEY

Morning & Afternoon Meeting!

This week we reviewed colors with balloons and pom-poms, practiced numbers recognition, emotions, counting, and Spanish vocabulary. We also explored puppets, sang our favorite songs, enjoyed storytime, conducted science experiments.. Muy bien, friends!

Color Mixing Experiment!

This fun science experiment is perfect to practice color recognition!

What will happen if we mix the colors Blue and yellow?

The 1A friends enjoyed making and mixing colors, evident through there facial expressions- wide eyes and big smile.

For our first color mixing experiment, we mixed two primary colors, blue and yellow- magically creating the color Green.

Why Should young learners engage in science experiments?

Toddlers are natural scientists. As they learn to ask questions, make predictions, observe, test, and then communicate their findings, they are developing critical thinking skills. Students are also being exposed to new vocabulary, math, and the concept of cause and effect. Literacy: Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses!

This week we introduced a new book, “Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses.” During the afternoon meeting, the 1A friends brought their own magic sunglasses :)

Science Experiment- Lava Lamp in a Glass!

The 1A students love science and were amazed to see the chemical reaction of water, oil, food coloring, and Alka-seltzer.

The Science behind the Experiment:

When you pour water into a bottle or cup with oil, the water will sink to the bottom, and the oil will float to the top.

The oil will float on the surface because water is heavier than oil. Water is denser than oil. The Alka-Seltzer tablet reacts with the water to make carbon dioxide gas.

These bubbles attach themselves to the colored water and cause them to float to the surface when the bubbles pop.

Focusing on Emotions

Last week we reviewed emotions with our 1A friends and showed "emotion props" - happy, sad, and mad/angry faces. Some were drawn on paper plates, and others were designed on coffee filters.

We asked the students:

"what does your happy face look like?"

"What does your sad face look like?"

"What does your mad/angry face look like ?"

The 1A friends were more than excited to demonstrate their happy face and especially their mad face :)

Toddlers are little people with big feelings that they don't always have the words for. Play is one of the best ways for young children to practice expressing and managing their feelings.

We will continue to focus on emotions throughout the school year.

Morning & Afternoon Meetings!

During our meetings this week, we sang our favorite songs, made playdough, read stories, practiced color recognition, counting, numbers, shapes, engaged in puppet play, and made paint together. We also introduced new Spanish vocabulary.

Holi Celebration!

Buckle My Shoe headed to Washington Market Park to celebrate “Holi”- an Indian celebration welcoming Spring. Teachers and students dressed in white and tossed organic powdered colors at each other. It was beautiful.

Cognitive Development/ Letter Recognition/ Sensory/ Fine and gross motor/ Hand-eye coordination:

  • Painting the Alphabet: This week, we painted the alphabet!

When our letters dry, we will display them in the classroom- a helpful tool used to practice letter recognition.

  • Digging for the Alphabet: With each letter our friends shoveled, we sang a Catchy toon to go along with that specific letter. Hearing the songs, the children were encouraged to keep digging for more and more letters.

-Letter manipulatives give children a way to interact with the alphabet through hands-on play. Most importantly, children can feel and see the shape of the letters they love singing about!

There are so many benefits of letter manipulatives, as they provide an open-ended world for children to explore them. From toddlerhood to early elementary, they help build confidence and interest, giving children a strong literacy foundation.

Cognitive Development/Water Play!

Water play is both enjoyable and educational. It helps children develop eye-hand coordination and math and science concepts.

Cognitive Development/ Literacy!

Early introduction to reading develops a child’s love of books and fosters new language.

Exploring books for our young learners is the beginning of pre-reading; flipping through all the pages, and using the illustrations to figure out what the book means without knowing the words.

Cognitive Development/ Motor Skills/ Language/ Making Smoothies!

Cooking can help children follow directions, build concentration, build vocabulary, encourage the development of early math skills, strengthen fine motor skills, and hand-eye coordination.

Children who are learning a second language boosts problem- solving, critical thinking, and listening skills in addition to improving memory, concentration, and the ability to multitask.

Making Play Vanilla Scented Play Dough!

With just flower, salt, water, and Vanilla extract the student helped make play dough!

Our friends squeezed, pulled and poked the medium- each time, the playdough, responding to their actions.
When children begin to notice a change in the play dough, they are learning that their actions have consequences.  This is empowerment, it encourages more experimentation.

The child’s brain is taking shape along with the material.

Making Sensory Bottles!

sensory bottles are a direct connection to sensory play. Sensory play is a hands on way to expose children to the world around them and allow their brains to make important connections.

-During our sensory activity, we reviewed our colors and numbers in English and Spanish.

The 1A Classroom Class Photo 2019/2020 School Year!

Home Fun: At home you can practice counting and colors.

Counting: Start counting, and listen to hear your toddler counting along with you. You may even hear them counting ahead of you :)

Colors: The 1A class loves drawing with crayons. While your little ones draw at home, ask them questions.

Examples: “what color are you using?” “What are you drawing?” “which other colors will you use?” These questions will surely spark conversation! -listen to see which colors they shout out, which colors they identify, which colors they favor. Will your little ones also identify the colors in Spanish?

HAVE FUN!

This week…

Painting!

Painting with paintbrushes!

The 1A friends are now maneuvering their paintbrushes across their canvas papers with ease.

-Painting with a paintbrush helps children develop their concentration, eye-hand coordination, and fine and gross motor skills.

Painting with young children not only helps their creative development, but it also stimulates their brain. Children who paint learn to think with an open mind, to look at situations creatively. They learn to express themselves more deeply through their art and their words.

-We took the opportunity to practice or colors in English and Spanish:

-Red ( Rojo )

-Blue ( Azul )

-Orange ( Anaranjado)

-Green ( verde )

-Paint (pintar)

Spanish Class!

This week in Spanish class, new vocabulary was introduced: Heart ( corazón), Friend ( amigo), Hug ( abrazo).

Creating Sticky Paint!

With just corn syrup and food coloring, the 1A children created thick, vibrant colors. The students immediately noticed the heaviness of the new paint, dripping from their paintbrushes. Enjoying the sticky sensation on their hands, friends giggled and clapped their hands.

Valentines Day Breakfast Celebration!

For Valentine's day, the 1A students shared a delicious breakfast!

-Parents, don’t forget to check your little ones cubbies!

The 1A friends worked hard, creating beautiful hand made keychains for their mommies and daddies.

-Red ( Rojo )

-Blue ( Azul )

-Orange ( Anaranjado )

-Black (Negro )

Valentine's Day Gifts for Mommies and Daddies!

“Friends, what are you making?”

Fine & Gross Motor Development/ Cognitive Development/ Independent Feeding!

Bravo, Arthur!

Each day our 1A friends are getting better at maneuvering their spoons at lunch time. Practice makes perfect!

-When children feed themselves, they develop fine motor skills through touching, grasping, spooning, and squeezing.

Self-feeding offers developing eaters sensory skill development, too, as they explore food's taste, texture, smell, color, and temperature.

Cognitive Development/ Sensory Play/ Investigating and painting with ice!

Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. The sensory activities allow children to refine their thresholds for different sensory information helping their brain to create stronger connections to process and respond to sensory information.

Thank you, 1A families!

We hope to see you all at the science fair tomorrow!
