A Letter

Dear Pre-K Families:

It has been an honor having your children at Buckle My Shoe, and in my class. They all have a special place in my heart. Thank you for entrusting me with your precious bundles.

As I said at graduation, you are all teachers, but you have all done an amazing job at becoming classroom teachers. You all deserve an award for helping your children complete their distance learning activities and for being a great co-teacher! All of your support and hard work did not go unnoticed.

I know this is not the ending we would have liked. Please feel free to reach out if the children want to chat or just say hi. Hopefully we will all see each other at Horatio Park sometime soon!

I can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things your children will accomplish in their future.

Have a wonderful summer!

Best wishes,

Melissa

Weekly Recap: 06.12.2020

Monday

On Monday, one of the Google classroom activities was to create fizzing moon rocks. Scientist Nora noticed that some of the moon rocks crumbled when they were taken out from the freezer. After exploring them with vinegar and lemon juice, she noticed that the vinegar made a stronger fizz.

During our Monday afternoon meeting, we create rocketships using bottles, or toilet paper/paper towel rolls. We also watched as the astronauts took a space walk outside of the International Space Station. We also had a surprise guest: Noelle! Thanks for joining us.

Tuesday

We talked about graduation during Tuesday’s morning meeting. We read Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come! and came up with ideas about how graduation will look.

During afternoon meeting, Nora and I made butter using heavy cream and salt. All you need is a jar/container, heavy cream, a pinch of salt, and arm muscles.

Wednesday

Wednesday is our weekly meeting with our 2’s/3’s friends. This week we made paper sculptures and read The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! and What Time is it Mr. Crocodile?.

During afternoon meeting we made chalk paint. Mix one part water to two parts cornstarch with a few drops of food coloring, and mix.

Thursday

We had Show & Tell during morning meeting. Noam shared her Ms. Potato Head. Liv shared her rainbow unicorn bag. Nora shared her bunny. Aidan shared his sunglasses that make him look like a pilot.

We also read The Day the Crayons Quit and The Day the Crayons Came Home.

Friday

During morning meeting we worked on letter recognition, letter-sound recognition, writing, and drawing. We also read The Duckling Gets a Cookie and Duck! Rabbit!. We also played the “Guess What’s in My Box?” game. The empty box wasn’t a trick, it was filled with love! The clues were “You can’t see it,” “You can feel it,” and “It’s how I feel about you.”

Home Happenings

What better way to beat the heat than with some ice painting?! That’s exactly what Nora did this week. Nora also left the city for a little and went to the farm!

George was inspired by our rocketship project on Monday, that he created the International Space Station, the planets, and more rocketships.

Weekly Recap: 06.05.2020

Art

This week we did squeeze and spray painting, and created bowls using the paper mache method.

Language & Literacy

This week we worked on a hearing game: hearing sounds. This activity is a great way to work on letter-sound recognition.

Graduation Prep Continues

This week we decided that the original graduation song wasn’t working for us and we wanted to something that would make us feel comfortable. All the children will be singing their own song for graduation! It will either be one that is already known or one that they are creating themselves.

Home Happenings

Nora has set up a monster hunting research station. George has been creating a forest with animals using play-dough.

Afternoon Meeting Activities

On Thursday we made foam dough using shaving cream and cornstarch, and on Friday we made pictures around a glued on image. We ended the week with drawings around a glued on image from magazines/catalogs.

Weekly Recap: 05.29.2020

Graduation Prep

This week, on Google Classroom, the children we asked to start coming up with ideas about how they would like their background to look for our online graduation.

Line Work

Can you transform a line into an image? Nora decided to change the activity a bit by using the lines to create new shapes and designs.

Edible Science

One of this week’s science projects was to create slushies in a bag! Storage bags, ice, salt, juice, and arm muscles make for a yummy treat.

Science, Science, and more Science!

This week was all about science! In addition to our slushie science, we also had a lava lamp experiment,

Meeting Times

This week we talked about space, practiced graduation, created mosaic art pieces, and created mixed media art pieces.

What’s going on at home?

After making slushies, Nora was inspired to open up a restaurant. She also created a large drawing butterflies and dragonflies.

Weekly Recap: 05.22.2020

Tall Towers Pt. 2

The first time we did this project was the very first week of our online learning. How did this tower look different from the first one you made? Was it taller?

Secret Messages

Secret messages is a great way for children to work on letter recognition, and to work on recognize words/sight words as they begin learning to read.

Leo and his parents found another solution when they couldn’t find a white crayon. Leo painted a piece of paper with warm lemon juice to reveal his marks.

Invented Spelling

Invented spelling is the way a child spells words that aren’t stored in his/her memory phonetically. Engaging in invented spelling, followed by appropriate feedback, has been found to facilitate learning to read and spell, not hamper the process. Encouraging invented spelling allows children to take risks. It is a necessary stage to develop the proficiency as a competent and confident writer.

Sensory Play

You are never too old for sensory play! Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.

What’s Your Story?

Using an image as a prompt, the children were asked to use their imaginations and come up with a story.

Rhyme Time

Science

This week there were 2 science projects on Google Classroom: Heat Conductivity & Volcano with Smoke. Nora’s volcano did not produce smoke, so she’s thinking about how to solve the problem.

Moments at Home

There are so many hours in a day and everyone is busy doing fun and exciting projects..

Weekly Recap: 05.15.15

Have you moved your body this week?

One of this week’s activities was a name workout. Leo and Nora gave it a try and it seemed like a lot of fun!

Snippets Inspired Art

This was a fun, open-ended activity to get your imaginations running wild! Nora made a family map of her submarine. Leo made a building. The first floor is a doctor’s office, the second floor is a toy store, and the third floor is a school where kids learn to be pilots.

Ramps

We have been studying ramps since the beginning of the year. This week there was another ramp challenge. Leo found a great ramp and used his body as the “ball.”

Symmetry

What other projects are you working on?

Nora’s project this week is all about submarines and creating a toy store. Noam has escaped the city for a little and has been creating art with natural materials.

Happy 5th Birthday Nora!

Weekly Recap: 05.08.2020

County Fair Day

Friday was County Fair Day! The children worked hard on creating games, treats, tickets, etc. for the big day. Thanks for the great idea Nora!

Family Member Interviews

Is it raining in here?

One of last week’s science experiments was to make it rain in a cup using shaving cream, water, and food coloring.

Naked Egg Experiment

What happens to an egg when you put it in water for 24 hours? What happens if you put an egg in vinegar for 24 hours?

What are you doing at home?

Nora is working on creating a book titled InvestiGATORS. It is a book about two daddy alligator detectives who have spy babies to help them on their missions.

Aidan created a train using chairs from around the house. He made sure to designate a seat for each of his loved ones. You can find out who is on his train in the video below.

Noam loves exploring water beads. This week she added animals to her play. Even Pedro, Noam’s dog, looked on as she played.

Weekly Recap: 05.01.2020

Let’s Make a Book

The first assignment of our book making week was to come up with the main character. Aidan’s main character was Earth, and Nora’s book is about a superhero family . Noam’s character is named Furrrrrrr. He has one eye and likes to eat oatmeal. Leo’s book is about a bunny that lives in his backyard. Her nameis Ballaloola.

Number Match

This week we worked on subitizing and number recognition.

Blow Painting

Can you use your breath to create art?

Morning & Afternoon Meetings

Literacy activities included secret words and “Guess the animal/object.”. Secret words is a great way for the children to work on their letter-sound recognition. The guessing game helps children to pay attention to details, use their memory, and work on their vocabulary.

We also began working on May calendars. Creating calendars are a good way to work on literacy (letter-sound recognition, and letter recognition) and math (number recognition and sequence).

One of this week’s activities was to create a scene based on an image. Leo was inspired by our morning meeting book (A House for Hermit Crab) and drew a hermit crab with the rest of his underwater scene.

We made oobleck during one of our afternoon meetings this week. How long did you keep playing with your oobleck after the meeeting?

Child-led Play

In addition to what we have been doing online, the children have continued to create their own play and games at home.

Week of the Young Child Recap: 04.24.2020

* Don’t forget to view the blog on a computer to see videos. *

Music Monday

During morning meeting, we made shakers using bottles or jars, and beans, peas, or rice. We noticed the difference in the sounds of the shakers. The more or less you put in your bottle effected the sound each bottle made. We also listened to Giraffes Can’t Dance.

Some of us used out bottles immediately to the ABC Stop song (one of our favorite songs to sing because you never know when Melissa is going to start singing again!).

One of the activities on Google Classroom was to to create a water whistle. Nora tried the experiment and said, “Wow!” as she worked.

The other activity on Google Classroom was to paint to music. Leo used a variety of brushes. Based on his artwork, do you think the music was slow or fast? Leo listened to Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alabama Shakes, and Explosions in the Sky.

Tasty Tuesday

We began Tasty Tuesday with a milk experiment. Using milk, food coloring, dish soap, and cotton swabs, we observed how the food coloring moved away from the dish soap covered cotton swab.

Work Together Wednesday

Work Together Wednesday was also Earth Day. During morning meeting we talked about how we can take care of our planet. One of the Google Classroom projects was to move cups from one side, to another. The catch was that it had to be done using rubber bands, pipe cleaners, and team work.

For afternoon meeting, we had a guest reader: Noelle! Thanks for reading to us Noelle!

Artsy Thursday

Artsy Thursday started with a reading of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Then we created our own dot inspired art.

Leo made clay and created sculptures with his mom. There was a panda, a panda house, bamboo, and penguins in an igloo.

During afternoon meeting we made puppets. The children seemed to be really excited about this project. Everyone use a variety of materials: fabric, paper, markers, and stickers.

Family Friday

During morning meeting we read The Family Book and The Thankful Book, both written and illustrated by Todd Parr. After that everyone went on a scavenger hunt with their special person. Everyone found something red, orange, green, colorful like a rainbow, and something that rolls. The children also shared what they like to do with their special person.

George likes to go on adventures to see animals with his mommy.

Leo likes to walk penny and read books with his grandmother.

Nora likes to go on adventures over the hills at the farm with her daddy.

Noam likes to read her favorite book with her daddy.

Liv likes to play hide and seek with her grandmother.

Aidan likes to find ladybugs with his mommy.

Letters Here, Letters There

Do you know your lowercase letters? This week we practiced matching uppercase letters to their lowercase letters. We also practiced our letters with connect the dot activities.

Number Spider

This week we worked on addition using Number Spiders and Number Lines.

Architects

Materials at home are different from materials at school. This week, the children were asked to build something using anything in the house, and then draw a picture of the structure. Aidan created a building using chairs, and Nora created an underwater city using kinetic sand.

The children were also asked to test out the strength of different columns: triangular, cylindrical, and square. Nora predicted that her cylindrical column would hold the most books, and she was correct.

Can you fix it?

Can you put a flashlight together? When you put it together, does it light up? Hmmm….

Apparently Nora is a professional when it comes to flashlights. She takes her flashlight apart and puts it back together almost every night!

Dramatic Play

Nora received her protective mask this week and the first thing she did was set up a unicorn hospital. Dramatic play is a wonderful way for children to express their feelings and reenact what they see happening around them.

Are you ready for a magic trick?

Leo showed us his magic trick where he made a coin disappear!

Stalactites & Stalagmites

Have you ever seen stalactites and stalagmites? Do you sometimes forget which is which? A great way to remember is that stalactites hang tight from the ceiling and stalagmites stand mighty and tall on the ground.

At the end of this week, we began stalactite and stalagmite experiments, and we’ll document how things go over the weekend and next week.

Weekly Recap: 04.10.2020

Looking on the brighter side

Despite the change in our routine, this week we talked about the good things that are happening while we’re home.

Noam: Having dada time.

Liv: That we moved to Florida until the virus is gone in New York. I have the pool.

Nora: More mama time.

Leo: The swimming pool each day.

Aidan: I learned how to ride a bicycle without training wheels.

Melissa: I get to have dinner with my family every night.

Do you remember?

During morning meetings, we listened to Stick and Stone, and Harry the Dirty Dog. When the story was over, we talked about who the characters were, if the characters had any problems, what the problems were, and how the problem was fixed.

This exercise is a good way to practice retaining information, work on attention span, and practice focusing.

Who is ready for a story?

During one of our morning meeting’s this week, the children were asked to create a story based on the image below. The variations in their stories show how one image can be interpreted in many ways.

Nora's Story
She (Princessy) is playing with her dolls in her castle. They she'll go on a little walk. She'll see a monster. He has horns like thorns and teeth like daggers. She'll gallop away because she's scared. She gets away. The monster goes back home. Princessy goes back home and has lunchy. She eats cupcakes, cake, and pink ice cream. The end.

Aidan's Story
Uey is exercising and is feeling sad because the arm is covering its face. The unicorn will dance next.

Noam's Story
Unicorn is pushing the snow away because it's bothering her eyes. Then she'll go to school. She'll play with the magna-tiles. She'll build a castle. Then she'll go home. On the way home she'll see a monster. She will fight with him. When she gets home she'll play. She'll hug her mommy and daddy. She'll tell her mommy and daddy about the monster, and they will say, "Oh no!"

Liv's Story
Elle is dancing because she's a musician. She's dancing on a stage. She'll bow after she's done dancing. She'll step off the stage. She's going to take a seat and see another dancer. When Elle gets home, she'll call her grandmas and papas. She'll tell them she danced at a show and they'll say, "Good job!" and she'll feel happy.

George's Story
Green is dancing because she loves dancing. Maybe she's happy. She feels like dancing because her mom asked to see her moves. She's going to go to another unicorn, named Ladybug. They talk to each other. Ladybug was drawing and Green was dancing. Ladybug drew a picture of Green and Green said "Cool drawing!"

Bubble Snakes

We created bubble snakes by using bottles, socks, dish soap, and water. The little holes from the weaving in the socks are what help to create a long snake of bubbles as opposed to big bubbles.

Let’s Count

We worked on number recognition and ordering them from 1 - 20.

Can you make a xylophone?

This week we made xylophones using water, food coloring, and glasses. Nora noticed that each glass sounded different. Aidan observed how the glasses were in order from the least amount of water to the most amount of water.

Ice Experiment

Can you pick up a piece of ice on a string? We tried it and here is what we found out. If you try to pick up a piece of ice with a piece of string on top of it, it doesn’t work. If you sprinkle the ice with salt, then place your sting on top of it, the ice begins to melt and refreeze around the string. Then we can pick it up! Some of us also tried the experiment with sugar, but it didn’t work.

Next week we will resume all morning meetings and google classroom activities. Please keep sharing all of your hard work and sending us videos of your week!

Weekly Recap: 04.03.2020

Let’s Germinate!

We began the week with a planting activity: to germinate seeds. Between all of us, we are sprouting lemon seeds, apple seeds, and gigante beans. As of Thursday, no one’s seeds had germinated yet, but we are continuing to draw our observations and patiently waiting for them to sprout.

Inclined Planes

This week’s inclined plane challenge was to make a ramp that would allow your ball to fly and another one to make your ball roll far away.

Portraits

We drew self-portraits and portraits of our friends this week.

Cooking Activity

Nora made some sweet potato chocolate chip muffins. Yum!

Individual Explorations and Projects

Nora made a Super Duper Bicycle Street Cleaning Machine. Aidan made a T-Rex out of clay.

Weekly Recap: 03.27.2020

Bridge Engineering

Our bridge inspiration came from Iggy Peck Architect. The challenge was to create a bridge strong enough to support something on top. Noam used connectors and Amazon packaging, Leo used magnetic tiles, and Nora used blocks and an egg carton.

Bubble Bubble…

Ada Twist, Scientist was our inspiration for creating color explosions! Leo used a combination of yeast, warm water, and hydrogen peroxide to create his explosion. Nora and Aidan used baking soda and vinegar.

It’s time to fly!

After listening to Rosie Revere, Engineer, the children were challenged to make a parachute.

We Can Make a Difference

Our last Andrea Beaty book read this week was Sofia Valdez, Future Prez. In this story, Sofia sets out to help her community by organizing to build a park.

thank-you-for-your-business.jpg

I want to start off by saying THANK YOU! It is wonderful to still be able to interact with everyone. You all have jumped on board so quickly while juggling everything else going on in life. Everyone is rocking the assignments and hopefully you’re having fun too!

Morning Meeting

Starting off our day with morning meeting helps set the tone for the day. This week we played “What’s in my Box?” and the Prediction Game. We also had show and tell, talked about where we were, as well as what we had planned each day.

Inclined Plane Study

We created ramps that (a) made a ball go through something, and (b) made a ball go in a trap. Challenges like these are good for problem solving distance, angles, and positioning.

Portraits

This week we worked on creating portraits of someone else. Drawing a picture of someone is a great way to slow down, ask yourself questions, and pay attention to details. What color are their eyes? Is their hair long or short? What are they wearing.

A,B,A,B…

This week the children were challenged to create a pattern using movement! Despite this being a tricky challenge (having to think how to move your body while moving it), the children nailed it!

Does it Dissolve?

Everyone searched through their pantries to find items they thought might and might not dissolve. Guess what? Apples definitely do not dissolve! Thanks for testing that out Leo.

Up, Up, and Away!

What can you use in your house to make the tallest tower possible? Our friends used toys, pots, a cavaletti, and more!

Weekly Recap: 03.13.2020

Pre-K Engineers

Since last week, the girls have been asking to make a tent. They were presented with a fort making kit and they immediately got to work. As I observed them work, I was better able see what was tricky and what came with ease. We will continue using the fort set, and begin sketching tent ideas, for the kids to gain more experience and confidence to create the tent of their dreams.

Stay Away Germs

In light of everything going on, and all the hand-washing we have been doing, I wanted to children to at least have a fun time washing their hands. Using a recipe, we made soap! Not only was this scientific, but we added literacy by taking turns sounding out,and writing the letters of the word “recipe.”

Recipe

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch

  • 1/8 - 1/4 cup castile soap (we used lavender scented)

  • 4 tsps. oil (any oil will be fine)

  • liquid watercolor paint (optional)

  • Mix all the ingredients together until you are able to form a ball. To use, wet your hands, take a pinch of soap, and rub hand together for at least 20 seconds.

Red, blue, red, blue…

Patterns can be found everywhere! The ability to recognize and create patterns help us make predictions based on our observations. Understanding patterns helps prepare children for learning complex number concepts and mathematical operations. They allow us to see relationships and develop generalizations. This week the children worked on completing patterns and creating patterns.

A,B,C,D,E…

We played a letter hunt game to work on letter recognition, letter-sound recognition, and letter writing.

Candid Shots

Weekly Recap: 03.06.2020

Squeeze, drip, down the inclined plane…

This week we started creating individual artwork using a ramp/inclined plane. As the children worked, they observed what happened to their paint as it moved down the ramp, creating a puddle of paint at the bottom. Sometimes the paint splattered if they squeezed the pipette with force, and sometimes the paint moved slowly down the paper when the pipette was squeezed gently. We’ll continue creating more pieces next week.

Ahh, fresh air!

We made sure to get outside a lot this week! Whether is was a walk around the neighborhood or playing at the park, we enjoyed our time out and about. One day we even stumbled upon a dead bumblebee. We wondered how it got there.

Find the letter’s baby

Working on our letter recognition, and introducing lowercase letters, the children matched the uppercase and lowercase letters by connecting them with a line. This week we worked on the letters A - I. Next week we’ll on J - R.

We love hollow blocks

A day does not go by when the children are not creating with the hollow blocks. This week Aidan made the letter T, friends worked together to create buildings, George and Aidan build a boat with a captain’s seat, and Nora, Noam, and Liv made a comfy resting place.

Weekly Recap: 02.14.2020

Math

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, our math work this week had a Valentine’s Day theme. By combining one to one correspondence, numerals, words, and ten-frames on one activity, children have the opportunity to make connections between the different formats of numbers.

This week we used play-dough to work our fine motor skills.

We also worked on bar graphs. The children had to count different heart shapes and represent them by coloring each box to the corresponding number.

Science

This week we conducted a science experiment using heart shaped candy. We placed the candies in various liquids: water, vinegar, soda, and lime juice. Our question was: Which liquid will make the candy heart dissolve? The children made predictions, observed what was happening, and drew pictures of their predictions and outcomes.

Language & Literacy

Books we read this week: Mixed: A Colorful Story, Little Pea, The I Love You Book, Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool, We Don’t Eat Our Classmates

Valentine’s Day

After all the excitement of the week, Valentine’s Day was finally here! The children handed out their gifts to their friends and then we enjoyed a berry smoothie and some cookies!

Weekly Recap: 02.07.2020

Blocks

Aidan and George were very busy in the block area earlier this week. Aidan worked on creating a replica of the Jeddah tower with 2 parking levels: one on the bottom and one at the to of tower. George made a boat with a floor for walking. As they worked, Aidan told George his structure was cool. George told Aidan that his structure was cool too.

Science

This week we explored color mixing in the sensory table. Soapy water was placed in table with 4 pump bottles filled with different colors. We mixed yellow (sun power according to the children) and blue (ocean power one day, blue and red another day, and red and yellow another day.

We made oobleck on Friday: a mixture of corn starch and water, and we added red and pink glitter. As the children played, they came up with a lot of descriptive words regarding their play.

  • tickles, hard, melting, cold, closing, moving, dripping, open, rain on your umbrella, sinking, magic, pretend, watery, sound, falling

Art

We worked on a variety of art projects this week. We painted with shades of yellow and purple, created watercolor and aluminum foil art inspired by the book Rainbow Fish., painted with corks, and explored and created on canvas using modeling clay. We also did some observational painting of some flowers; first discussing what details we noticed before putting brush to paper. On Friday, Aidan and Liv noticed Nora was out and decided to make some drawings for her to see when she comes back.

Weekly Recap: 01.24.2020

Our week was science filled! We are in the middle of a germ experiment, creating mazes using pipes, and working on our incline plane topic for the science fair.

Apart from science, we continued signing in, worked on letter-sound recognition using puzzles, did lots of body moving in the gym, had yoga with Stelios, music with Andrew, Spanish con Raquel, and soccer with Coach Pajamas.

Our Science Filled Week

“Germs are yucky!” This week we started a germ experiment. We rubbed bread on a variety of places around the school to see if we could grow germs. The children made predictions on which one they thoughtOn day 3 of our experiment we sat around the table to observe the bread slices. We saw germs/mold starting to grow on one of the pieces. We drew our observations, and practiced writing “Day 3” in our science books.

How do germs spread? We sprayed a little water to our hands and sprinkled glitter on them. Then we gave each other high-fives to see what would happen with the glitter. Everyone had various colors of glitter on their hands! We discovered that germs can spread very easily.

On Wednesday we tried building by creating inclined planes.

We explored ramps of various inclines to see which cylinder would get to the bottom of the ramp first.

We even conducted an experiment in the bathroom to see if there are incline planes in the sink.

We did some engineering work on Friday to see if we could create a marble maze. The children worked together to put the pieces together, and then each child tested it out. None of the marbles ever made it to the bottom. Next week we have to do some problem solving to see what we have to change in order to make our mazes work.

Weekly Recap: 01.17.2020

It was a fun and interesting week to say the least. Thank you all for being so patient this week. Though it was a busy one, it was a fun one! We had a wonderful time meeting new friends and playing in a new environment. We are looking forward to continuing to strengthen our bond by planning visits each month.

On Monday we started talking about our science project for the science fair: inclined planes/ramps. We discussed what we know, and what we want to learn. Then we went to the park to look for ramps.

We spent the rest of week exploring the Tribeca location with our new Pre-K friends.

On Monday we told them what we are planning to study for the science fair (ramps), and they told us what they were exploring (rainbows). Aidan and Noam created with loose parts. Aidan said he was an architect making a building, and Noam said she made Melissa.

On Wednesday we made salad with Diane, practiced beading, explored magnets, created blow painting art, and explored a ramp toward the back of the school.

On Thursday we painted at mini easels, explored insta-snow, made slime, played Headbanz (similar to our sticker game), had yoga with Jen, and soccer with Coach C.
